The Cancer Department (Radiation Oncology) of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College at Raipur in Chhattisgarh has achieved an important milestone on the occasion of National Cancer Day.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Medical Education -1) of the Government of India has directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to approve 03 seats for Master of Chirurgiae (MCh), a super specialization course in surgical oncology in Medical College Raipur. Following the approval, the important course can be started from the academic session.
It is noteworthy that six recognized seats of MD (Radiotherapy) are already being operated in the Cancer Department of Medical College. After the approval of the Super Specialization course in Surgical Oncology, now the cancer patients of the state will be able to get better medical facilities.
Dean of the college Dr Vivek Chaudhary and Professor of Surgical Oncology Dr Ashutosh Gupta said that Raipur Medical College is the first government medical institute of Central India, where this special course is being started. Chairman of the NMC Cell of the college Dr Arvind Neral said that last year an application was filed for this course, but due to some shortcomings, NMC did not issue LOP (Letter of Permission).
The college administration appealed twice for reconsideration after removing these shortcomings. Recently, as per the instructions of NMC, Professor of Surgical Oncology Department Dr Ashutosh Gupta was personally sent to New Delhi, where the staff, infrastructure, equipment, clinical facilities and available resources were reviewed. After satisfactory evaluation, NMC approved the MCH course.
According to officials, cancer patients will get better facilities with the introduction of the surgical oncology course. The cancer patients will get advanced surgical facilities, the state will get super-specialists in surgical oncology and medical postgraduate students will get excellent opportunities for higher education and research.
With the important achievement, cancer patients of Chhattisgarh will get the facility of state-of-the-art treatment and Medical College Raipur will emerge as a major center in the field of cancer treatment and research.
