Frustrated with civilians’ succour to the security forces, Maoists ambushed a private vehicle ferrying passengers in Dantewada district today morning.

One person was killed while 11 others were injured in the improvised explosive device (IED) blast that took place near Ghotiya village under Malavehi police station in Dantewada. Of the injured, the condition of two was reported to be critical.

The civilians were travelling from Bodli in Narayanpur district to Dantewada on the newly built road that once wore a deserted look. The rebels had been opposing the road construction and were reportedly frustrated with the accelerating traffic on the route.

“Maoists rarely target civilians but this was a clear case as they were frustrated as security forces had been dominating the area,” Dantewada Superintendent of Police Dr Abhishek Pallava said. He along with his team rushed to the spot soon after the incident and arranged to evacuate the injured to the nearest hospitals.

According to Pallava, the road was built with the support of civilians and this was the reason why the rebels targeted the vehicle to unleash a reign of terror among civilians. The villagers had even passed on information to police about the movement of Maoists in the area and the possibility of planting IED. Following the inputs, the police were on high alert and even the driver of the vehicle was alerted in Bodli about the possibility of the road being dotted with IED.

The victim had been identified as Dhansingh of Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh. He along with a few other persons from his village were on their way to Telangana in search of a job. He was a casual labourer.
