Ambikapur, June 6
State-owned Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) conducted a mass tree plantation drive at Parsa East and Kete Basen (PEKB) and Parsa Coal Block (PCB) mines in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja on the occasion of World Environment Day.
In an inspirational initiative towards environmental conservation, RRVUNL started the campaign in Udaipur block of Surguja district on Thursday. While 26,120 saplings were planted at PEKB and 2,100 were planted at PCB mine. With the planting of a total of 27,220 saplings, the program became a concrete and inspirational initiative towards environmental conservation, which will promote greenery and biodiversity of these areas.
Everyone from employees to contractors participated enthusiastically in the massive tree plantation programme. The event was not just a tree plantation but emerged as a collective resolve to save nature and increase greenery.
Drawing competitions on the theme ‘Eliminating Plastic Pollution Globally’ were also organized in Parsa, Salhi, Basen, Tara, Janardanpur and Fattepur villages at the beginning of the week under the joint aegis of Environment and CSR departments. About 400 students of classes I to VIII participated in these competitions. Children securing first, second and third positions in two categories in each village – classes I to V and VI to VIII were awarded.
At the prize distribution ceremony, Avinash Kumar of Environment Department felicitated all the winners and called upon the children to play an active role in protecting the environment on a continuous basis. He said, “Protecting the environment is not just a one-day task, it should become a part of our thinking and lifestyle.”
The series concluded with a tree plantation drive on Thursday, which gave the message that a clean, green and plastic free future is possible if we all work together.
RRVUNL has taken up a series of infrastructural development works in the area, which include repair and wall painting of government schools, construction of additional classrooms and concrete toilets, construction of roads in villages and repair and beautification of passenger waiting rooms, etc., keeping in view the major needs of the 14 villages near the mine. Also, to promote environmental sustainability, more than 15.69 lakh trees have been planted in more than 1200 acres of mined land.
