SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant produces a wide range of value-added special steel grades for its customers and for various applications.
Enhancing its special steel production, the Plant has in last fiscal year 2023-24 produced 3.85 million tonnes (MT) of value-added special steel grades as against 3.54 MT in previous fiscal year 2022-23. Production of special steel grades in 2023-24 was 73.8 per cent of total Saleable Steel production. Loading of special steel for despatch in 2023-24 was also higher at 3.83 MT as against 3.48 MT in 2022-23.
Special Steel production from the Plant’s Plate Mill in 2023-24 included 2,54,045 Tonnes of High Tensile / Sailma grade plates, 95,948 T of Boiler Quality grade, 17,661 T of Plates with thickness above 40 mm with Non-destructive Testing, 65,970 T of Normalised Rolled and 25,812 T of Normalised Mild plates, 8466 T of Sail Hard grade plates, 3155 T of Copper Bearing plates and other grades. The Mill also loaded 1358 T of naval grade DMR 249 Grade A plates for despatch during the year.
Special steel grades rolled out by the Plant’s Modex unit Bar & Rod Mill in 2023-24 include 23,550 T of TMT HCR grade, 3,32,698 T of SAIL SEQR 550 D grade, 3,88,430 T of Fe500 D grade and 2,13,862 T of Fe550 D. Special steel grades of angles and channels in Light Structural sections rolled out by the Plant’s Merchant Mill in 2023-24 include 182861 T of IS 2062 250/350 (BR), 8883 T of 2062 Cu (Copper) grade and 2922 T of Sailma 2062 410 Grade A. In the Rounds & Bars sections of special grade steel, Merchant Mill rolled out 4,10,364 T of TMT Bars including 12,566 T of TMT (HCRM) and 1,25,567 T of TMT (550D). The Mill rolled out 2,23,334 T of TMT (Fe-500D) and 48,897 T of TMT (SEQR-550D).
Special steel grades rolled out by the Plant’s Wire Rod Mill in 2023-24 included 29,933 T of Electrode Quality (EWNR) IS-2879 wire rods, 1,78,014 T of TMT Rods (500D/550D) including 9564 T of TMT (HCRM) and 2,43,700 T of Gr-II/CAQ/MIG plain wire rods.
The entire production of 1.20 Million Tonnes of R 262 grade rails produced by Plant’s Universal Rail Mill and Rail & Structural Mill fall in value added special steel category. The Plant also produced 1,54,275 Tonnes of special grade semis for supply to its customers as well as sister plants in SAIL.
