Steel plants of SAIL including Bhilai Steel Plant have supplied 16,000 T of steel including plates, TMT Bars and structurals for construction of the world’s tallest railway bridge, that soars 359 metres above the bed of Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir.
Steel is one of the most important components of any construction and industrial activity. According to news reports, the construction of the bridge involved fabrication of about 29,000 metric tonnes of steel, 10 lakh cubic metres earthwork, more than 66,000 cubic metres of concrete and 84 kilometers of rock bolts and cable anchors
The 1.3-kilometre-long bridge stands 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. An engineering marvel, the bridge is designed to withstand high wind speed of up to 266 kmph and earthquake forces of highest intensity. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project (USBRL), the bridge that will boost connectivity in the region is part of the 111-km-long winding stretch from Katra to Banihal. The bridge not only provides faster and more efficient all-weather transport route in the region, it is also of strategic importance to the country.
Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) that produces a wide range of steel from its steel plants has supplied desired grades of steel for construction of many such critical infrastructure projects of national importance, including dams, bridges, tunnels, flyovers & expressways, for energy sector, defence sector.
SAIL’s steel plants have supplied 16,000 T of steel including 6690 Tonnes of TMT products, 1793 Tonnes of Structural Steel and 7511 Tonnes of Steel Plates, Hot Strip Mill products and Chequered Plates for construction of the world’s tallest railway bridge in Jammu and Kashmir.
Out of the total volume of steel supplied by SAIL for construction of the bridge, Bhilai Steel Plant has supplied 12,432 Tonnes of steel including 5922 Tonnes of TMT steel, 6454 Tonnes of plates and 56 Tonnes of structural steel. SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant and Bokaro Steel Limited supplied the remaining volume of SAIL steel.
Steel from SAIL- Bhilai Steel Plant has been used in various strategic sectors and projects of national importance. Besides producing desired grade of rails for Indian Railways, SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant produces a large variety of wide, thick & heavy plates, including value-added special steel grades for different applications. The entire range of TMT products produced by the Plant is of superior quality with earthquake-resistant & corrosion resistant properties. The plant also produces structural grade steel including channels, angles and beams.
SAIL-Bhilai Steel has been used in defence sector, energy & power sector, construction and infrastructure projects including bridges, highways, tunnels, flyovers etc, in highrise buildings and industrial structures in seismic and corrosion prone areas, in heavy machinery, oil & gas sector, space sector, atomic energy installations among others. Steel produced by Bhilai has been used in construction of Bandra-Worli Sea-Link as well as the Atal Setu in Mumbai, Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, Atal Tunnel and many other infrastructure projects of national importance. Steel produced by Bhilai has been used to build Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant & other warships. Large volumes of TMT Bars have been supplied by SAIL-BSP for the upcoming bullet train project. SAIL-BSP has also supplied TMT products for the Central Vista project in national capital.
