SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant concluded the year 2024 with remarkable achievements and once again strengthened its position as a leader in the steel industry, with the Modex units achieving major production milestones and surpassing several records.

In December 2024, SMS-3 achieved a remarkable production milestone of 3,37,184 tons (2,034 heats), marking the highest monthly output among all Steel Melting Shops in SAIL. This record surpasses the previous highest of 3,37,009 tons achieved by SMS-2 of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in January 2024.

The major contributor was the production of 150 section billets, which was about 125 per cent of the Operating Plan. Stabilisation of open casting for 150 section billets from CV1 caster helped in improved productivity, fulfilling the requirement of mills and external customers and achieving this record production milestone.

The exceptional feat was accomplished by the seamless operation of all four casters for 16 days in close synchronization with key units of BSP. On the other hand, Sinter Plant-3 (SP-3) also etched its name in history by achieving an unprecedented monthly sinter production milestone in December 2024, which stood at a staggering 5,50,055 tonnes, surpassing its previous best of 5,38,154 tonnes set in January 2024.

A major contributor to this achievement was Sinter Machine-2, achieving its highest-ever monthly production of 2,95,437 tonnes, eclipsing the previous record of 2,84,714 tonnes, also set in January 2024.

Plant’s Blast Furnace department has also clocked major records in December 2024 by achieving Hot Metal production of 2,52,731 T from Blast Furnace-8 (Mahamaya) against its previous best record of 2,48,862 T made in March 2024. BF-8 also achieved the best-ever monthly productivity of 2.390 Tons per day in December 2024 surpassing the previous best of 2.352 tons per day made in November 2024, resulting from meticulous planning and coordination of complex activities and logistics involved in the steelmaking process.
