SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant on COVID combat campaign

Team News Riveting

Raipur, April 12

The Medical and Health Services Department of SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has pulled out all the stops in its war against the COVID pandemic.

Working day and night, the entire army of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff at the Plant’s JLN Hospital and Research Centre are doing their best to treat employees and their dependents suffering from COVID. The management of BSP has in the meantime made all resources available to help the M & HS team to carry on with their fight against the pandemic.

The best possible treatment is being provided under the guidance and supervision of BSP Director (in-charge) Anirban Dasgupta, Dr SK Issar, ED (M&HS), Dr Pramod Binayke, CMO, Dr Ravindranath, CMO and under the leadership of Dr Trinath Dash, Dr AD Bannerjee, Dr Sonali Trivedi. Necessary resources are being made available by Shri Rakesh, ED (Material Mgt) and Shri S K Dubey, ED (P&A) and their teams.

Right from the time the state government gave its consent for COVID 19 treatment at JLN Hospital & RC, the Plant’s M & HS team has been working to increase the number of beds devoted to treatment of COVID patients. With 537 beds for Covid patients as on date, the JLN Hospital has become one of the hospitals in the state with maximum number of beds for COVID patients. Both AIIMS, Raipur and Raipur Medical College have 500 beds each for treatment of COVID patients.

It is worth mentioning here that JLNHRC is not a dedicated COVID hospital. Efforts are now underway to increase the number of beds at JLN Hospital. Durg Collector Sarveshwar Narendra Bhurre has been a big support, playing an important role in giving final shape to Bhilai Steel Plant M & HS team’s plans and efforts to increase facilities for fighting COVID.

Given the situation that is becoming increasingly critical by the day, the Plant’s JLN Hospital has increased the number of beds with oxygen supply. As of now oxygen is being directly supplied at bedside of 270 beds through the central oxygen supply system. For the remaining beds, oxygen is supplied through oxygen cylinders. To increase the number of beds with oxygen supply, the medical team has used internal resources to facilitate supply of piped oxygen inside the ward. The team led by Shahid Ahmed and Balbir Singh have played an important role in this. Experts have been called in from other states to extend the piped oxygen facility to other wards.

Besides the numbers of beds available in JLN Hospital’s ICU, additional number of beds have been made available for COVID patients needing treatment in ICU. The A 3 Ward has been converted into ICU with all required facilities. Preparations are underway for opening a step down Covid Care Centre. Same would be opened soon as there is adequate number of staff. State Govt has been requested to make available required additional staff. As of now there are over 42 ICU beds in JLN Hospital.

In the meantime, the Management of BSP has now expedited inspection of non-residential buildings in the Township for making available additional beds in any such suitable buildings. Necessary arrangements are being put in place for the same.
