SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant registers record performance amidst pandemic

Braving all odds and challenges posed by the situation arising from COVID 19 pandemic, SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has finished the Fiscal Year 2020-21 with record-breaking annual performances in several areas.

The performance in last quarter (Q4) of the fiscal year has been particularly encouraging with the Plant recording best-ever performances in almost all the main parameters of performance in the concluding the month of March 2021. All the Modex units have performed exceptionally well in 2020-21 with Blast Furnace 8, SMS 3, Universal Rail Mill, Bar & Rod Mill and RMP 3 recording best ever annual performances as well as best monthly performances in March 21.

Congratulating Team Bhilai for having collectively risen to record new highs in so many areas of performance, Anirban Dasgupta, Director I/c SAIL-BSP said credit goes to each and every shop and department. Addressing an interaction organised on digital platform on 1st April 2021 for departments to highlight their performances, Dasgupta urged HoDs to work towards fulfilling targets for the month of April 21 and Annual Business Plan for FY 21-22.  Director I/c also cautioned everyone to guard against the threat of COVID 19 and to use digital platforms to the extent possible for interactions and to ensure social distancing during departmental meetings.

Congratulating the Plant collective for record-breaking performances, Executive Director (Works) Rajeev Sehgal said the Plant has shown exceptional all-round improvement in physical as well as financial performance in the last quarter of FY 20-21, with all Modex units having achieved their best ever performances in March 21. Such performances make us realise the hidden potential and capabilities we have, he stated. The kind of production levels we have achieved consistently in March 21 despite some intermittent hiccups gives us enough confidence to not only achieve but surpass ABP targets of 2021-22 by good margin, he said.

BF 8 concluded the year with best ever annual production of 24,54,015 T, surpassing previous best of 23,63,481 T in 2019-20. Steel Melting Shop 3 that picked up pace during the course of the year has recorded its best ever cast steel production of 22,12,692 T, surpassing previous best of 11,37,236 T in 2019-20. This included best ever billet production of 13,14,407 T as against previous best of 5,75,572 T in 2019-20, and best ever blooms production of 8,97,956 T as against previous best of 5,58,676 T in 2019-20.

Universal Rail Mill has recorded its best ever annual production of 6,29,300 T of UTS 90 prime rails as against previous best of 5,38,190 T in 2019-20. URM and RSM combined to record best ever loading of 7,36,019 T of Long Rails as against previous best of 6,32,643 T in 2019-20.

Bar & Rod Mill that successfully produced several sections of SeQR grades has also recorded its best ever annual production of 3,84,228 T surpassing previous best of 1,82,621 T in 2019-20. RMP 3, another Modex unit, too has recorded best ever annual production of 3,02,970 T, surpassing previous best of 2,00,952 T in 2019-20. 

Excelling in the important area of techno-economic parameters, the Plant has recorded best ever Coke Rate of 447 Kg per tonne of hot metal in 2020-21 as against previous best of 463 Kg/THM in 2019-20. Best ever coal dust injection rate (CDI) rate of 76 Kg per tonne of hot metal was recorded by blast furnaces as against previous best of 61 Kg/THM in 2019-20.

Modex unit, Blast Fce 8 has recorded best ever coke rate of 411 Kg per tonne of hot metal as against previous best of 450 Kg/THM in 2019-20. BF 8 also recorded best ever CDI rate of 99.5 Kg per tonne of hot metal as against previous best of 67 kg/THM in 2019-20. BF 8 has also recorded best ever blast furnace productivity of 2.05 T/cum/day in 2020-21.

Other departments including Marketing Dept and Material Recovery Dept (MRD) have contributed richly by enhancing secondary sales through auctions. Marketing team and all associated departments achieved ever best yearly cash collection of Rs. 3420 crore from secondary sales, sales of pig iron, Commercial Rail and Iron ore fines in fiscal year 2020-21, surpassing previous best of Rs.2010 crore in 2018-19.

MRD that has been achieving best ever despatch record from Boria commercial complex continuously for six months starting from October 2020, has recorded best ever yearly despatches as well as best monthly despatches in March 21, both in terms of Quantity and Value.
