SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has registered record calendar year performances in several areas during the Calendar Year 2023.
For the first time, the Plant crossed the milestone of 5 MT (million tonne) in Production and Loading of Saleable Steel for despatches in a Calendar Year on 14th Dec’23. Highest ever Saleable Steel Production of 5.26 MT was recorded in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 4.66 MT achieved in the year 2022. Highest ever loading of 5.23 MT Saleable Steel for Despatches was recorded in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 4.68 MT achieved in the year 2021.
In the area of hot metal production by blast furnaces and crude steel production by steel melting shops, the Plant surpassed 13 year old records. Highest ever production of 5.93 MT Hot Metal was recorded in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 5.52 MT achieved in the year 2010. This included highest ever production of 2.66 MT Hot Metal by Blast Furnace 8, surpassing the previous best of 2.55 MT achieved in the year 2021. Blast Furnaces also recorded best ever coal dust injection (CDI) Rate of 121 Kg per tonne of hot metal, surpassing previous best of 110 Kg/THM achieved in 2022.
Highest ever production of 5.63 MT Crude Steel was recorded by the Plant in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 5.24 MT achieved in the year 2009. This record was made possible by best ever production of 3.39 MT of cast steel by Steel Melting Shop 3, including best ever production of 1.13 MT of Cast Blooms and best ever production of 2.25 MT of Cast Billets by SMS 3, surpassing previous records set in 2022.
Highest ever production of 8.55 MT of total Sinter was recorded, surpassing the previous best of 8.00 MT achieved in 2022. This included best ever production of 5.86 MT by SP 3. Refractory Materials Plant 3, another Modex unit recorded highest ever total Production of 6.00 Lakh T, surpassing the previous best of 4.64 Lakh T achieved in the year 2022.
In the area of rails production, Modex unit, Universal Rail Mill recorded highest ever Prime Rail Production of 8.34 Lakh T in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 7.41 Lakh T achieved in the year 2022. The Mill that rolls out the world’s longest 130 metre rail recorded highest ever Long Rail Production at 8.01 Lakh T, surpassing the previous best of 6.99 Lakh T achieved in the year 2022. The Plant’s Rail & Structural Mill also recorded highest ever Long Rail Production at 1.68 Lakh T, surpassing the previous best of 1.50 Lakh T achieved in the year 2014. Highest ever total Long Rail Production of 9.69 Lakh T was recorded in 2023, surpassing the previous best of 8.42 Lakh T achieved in 2022.
The Plant’s Bar & Rod Mill recorded highest ever Finished Production of 9.69 Lakh T, surpassing the previous best of 8.14 Lakh T achieved in 2022. Plate Mill too recorded highest ever special steel plate production. Highest ever production of 1.20 Lakh T of Boiler Quality plates was recorded, surpassing the previous best of 1.11 Lakh T achieved in 2021. Highest ever production of 2.81 Lakh T of High Tensile Plate was also recorded, surpassing the previous best of 2.34 Lakh T achieved in 2014.
Bhilai Steel Plant recorded highest ever Total Loading for Direct despatches at 2.91 MT in calendar year 2023, surpassing the previous best of 2.68 MT achieved in the year 2022.
