SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant, has been conferred with the prestigious Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award 2025. The recognition was bestowed by the Institute of Directors (IOD), New Delhi, in acknowledgement of the BSP’s pioneering initiatives in environmental sustainability and innovation.
The award was presented during the 26th International Conference on Environment Management and Climate Change, held on June 26, 2025, at Bengaluru. The event was chaired by H D Kumaraswamy, Union Cabinet Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, Government of India. The distinguished gathering included industry leaders, senior IAS officers, prominent environmentalists, and representatives from various sectors of the Government of India, reflecting the nation’s growing commitment to sustainable industrial development.
On behalf of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant, the award was received by Tapas Dasgupta, CGM I/c (Iron), who has played a pivotal role in conceptualising and implementing the award-winning initiative. The recognition was awarded specifically for the development of eco-friendly paver blocks and tiles manufactured entirely from steel industry waste, primarily steel slag.
The project has positioned Bhilai Steel Plant as the first entity in India to develop and commercially produce paver blocks and tiles using 100 per cent steel slag, a significant milestone in sustainable waste management and resource optimisation. These eco-innovative products not only contribute to circular economy practices but also match market offerings in terms of pricing, durability, and quality.
