Raipur, January 7
Sinter Plants–2 and 3 of SAIL–Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) have jointly achieved a new benchmark in daily sinter production by recording 28,250 tonnes on 5 January 2026, setting a fresh all-time record.
The previous best performance of 28,212 tonnes was achieved on 11 January 2024.
Besides the Sinter Plants, supporting departments such as LDCP, Blast Furnaces, OHP and Coke Ovens played a vital role in achieving this record. Timely availability of raw materials, enhanced operational coordination and strict adherence to process discipline were identified as key enablers of this success.
From a technical standpoint, several critical interventions contributed to this achievement. These included improvement in both the quality and quantity of calcined lime in the sinter mix, enhancement in the physical and chemical quality of iron ore and fines, and strengthening of overall process control. The department has indicated that, in the near future, the installation of an iron ore crusher and the subsequent availability of crushed iron ore and fines are expected to further boost sinter production. Continuous efforts are also underway to reduce the specific consumption of calcined lime in sinter to 25 kg per tonne.
Additionally, productivity and output at Sinter Plant–2 have witnessed notable improvement through optimum steam regulation in the secondary mixing drum and the introduction of hot air flow on the bed via annealing hoods in Machines–1 and 2.
On the strength of these integrated and sustained efforts, it has been expressed that Sinter Plants–2 and 3 are well poised to jointly achieve the ambitious target of 30,000 tonnes of daily sinter production in the near future.
