The Steel Melting Shop-3 (SMS-3) of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has achieved a historic milestone by setting a new benchmark for Steel Ladle life, reflecting outstanding technical expertise, meticulous discipline, and teamwork.

Steel Ladle No. 09 completed 119 heats, contributing to 19,955 tonnes of steel production, surpassing the previous record of 116 heats, the BSP said in a statement. The campaign began on 3rd June 2025, when Ladle-09 took its first heat.

Round-the-clock inspection and monitoring were carried out after each heat by the Ladle Bay operations team, along with expert representatives from the Refractory Engineering Department (RED). Special attention was given during intermediate maintenance, with detailed examination and repairs of the bottom, metal zone, and slag zone.

This careful supervision and strict technical discipline ensured the ladle’s continuous availability, prevented any disruption in steel production, and maintained a healthy fleet size throughout the campaign.
