The Mill that rolls out TMT Bars and light structurals including channels and angles is presently operating with two reheating furnaces to roll out Angle 50x50x6. As many as 10 wagons of this grade and specification of angle being rolled now have been sent to BHEL, Hyderabad.

Recalling Sunday’s performance, Mahant Yadav, AGM and In-charge of A Shift, said, “I could feel right in the beginning of the shift that all conditions in furnace and mill were conducive for record production. I immediately spoke to all Section In-charges and asked everyone to be on alert. We were getting metal from furnace at good pace and mill conditions were favourable. The entire team responded wonderfully, with each and every section pitching in with their best. All jobs including pass change etc were planned meticulously and executed swiftly. Even cobbles were removed swiftly. The result was that we could beat the previous shift record by a good margin.”
Yadav who has led his team to break many records and solve several tricky problems in the past, says humbly, “in the end it is always excellent team work that leads us to make records.” CGM (Merchant Mill & Wire Rod Mill) Ajay Bedi gave all credit for the superlative performances to the motivated and energised team of Merchant Mill. From furnaces to finishing area, each and every section has been performing admirably, he said.
Meanwhile, Converter-C (BOF-3) of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Steel Melting Shop 3 achieved a historic milestone on 23rd July 2022 when it crossed lining life of 12,000 heats. This was achieved in the very first campaign of the Converter – a unique feat which has few parallels in BOF steel making.
BOF 3 of SMS-3 was commissioned on 20th February 2020 and it has been in continuous operation since then. During this period, the furnace produced more than 2 million tonnes of crude steel.
This feat was made possible by continuous monitoring of the refractory lining by laser profiling and taking preventive repairs. Increased lining life has substantially increased the BOF availability and reduced the refractory cost.
