SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Universal Rail Mill (URM) that rolls out world’s longest 130 metre rail in single piece and supplies 260 metre welded rail panels to Indian Railways has created several records in production of R 260 grade and 60E1 profile rails on 13th March 2022.

URM rolled highest number of 367 blooms on 13th March 22 as against previous best of 360 blooms rolled on 4th Feb 2022. The modern mill rolled out the highest number of 253 numbers of 130 metre rails in a day on 13th March 22 as against previous best of 239 numbers on 26th Feb 2022.

URM recorded its highest tonnage of prime rails production at 2674 Tonnes on 13th March 22 as against previous best of 2561 Tonnes on 27th August 2021. Finished rail production at 2858 Tonnes on 13th March 22 was the highest in any single day as against previous best of 2747 T on 31st Oct 2021.

Highest number of 363 rails were tested in the Mill’s non-destructive testing facility on 13th March 22 as against previous best of 354 on 24th Aug 2021. Highest number of 366 rails were visually inspected on 13th March 22 as against previous best of 352 on 31st Oct 2021. As many as 151 numbers of 260 metre long rail welded panels (RWL) were inspected on 13th March 22 – the highest in any single day – as against previous best of 150 on 2nd March 2022.

SAIL-BSP has been producing the exact specification based rails for the Indian Railways throughout its association of more than six decades. The R260 grade of Rails is targeted to meet the requirements of Indian Railways for higher speed and higher axle load. Specifications given by RDSO for this new grade of rails are even more stringent than the specifications of rails used in European countries. As such the steel for this new grade of rails is cleaner and the rails have higher yield strength and better mechanical properties.

SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant is producing this new grade and profile of rails from both its modern Universal Rail Mill and its older Rail & Structural Mill.
