SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Steel Melting Shop 2 (SMS-II) has achieved yet another milestone by completing the Campaign Repairs (CR) of Converter “A” ahead of schedule.
Campaign Repair of Converter ‘A’ was taken up from 24 Jan 2022 and as per schedule the converter was to be commissioned on 06 Feb 22-night shift. Due to collective efforts round the clock under the able leadership of Sri Sushil Kumar, CGM, SMS-2, Converter Shop team along with allied departments Viz: Engineering Shops, RED, C&HM-4, PEM, PLEM, MM departments Purchase, Stores, Inspection, Mechanical Services, Tools and Tackles, Lubrication department, Instrumentation, CED, CRME, HME, ETL, ERS, INCOS could commission Converter in ‘A’ shift of 4 Feb 2022 i.e. 8 shifts ahead of schedule.
It may be noted that this campaign repair was unique in the sense that several jobs were taken up for the first time and completed successfully. In Feb 2021, bearing of intermediate gear of Secondary Reducer of Converter ‘A’ main tilting drive was found to be damaged. Replacement of bearing at that point of time could have resulted in considerable downtime, cutting the production through Converter Shop by 33 per cent. Replacing the bearing was a complex job as it was out of direct crane approach. A decision was taken to fit a bush bearing in two halves temporarily and restore the original bearing later. This innovative initiative resulted in running the Converter through continuous careful monitoring for another 11 months till this campaign repair (CR) was taken up. During this CR, this bearing was replaced successfully.
Another innovative job that was done during the CR for the first time was Trifurcation of overflow and drain lines of GCP water tanks. This will save precious, soft water to the tune of 25000 m3 per annum. This job would be replicated in Converter ‘B’ and ‘C’ in next financial year.
The other noteworthy jobs taken up were replacement of Top cone, GCP hood replacement, complete brick replacement of Converter Vessel apart from other regular campaign repair jobs. CGM SMS-II Sushil Kumar congratulated the entire Converter Collective for their efforts in completing the campaign repairs ahead of the schedule. Tarun Kanrar, CGM(RED), Sudhir Kumar, GM(SMS-II), Rajiv Shrivastav, GM(Converter, Operation), K Rajkumar, GM(Converter -Mech), Shishir Mallick, GM (Converter, Mechanical), PK Mishra, GM (Electrical) and other senior executives of SMS-II were present on the occasion.
