SAIL-DSP rolls specialized wheels for Railways

Team News Riveting

Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), had rolled out specialized wheels for the Indian Railways to help import substitution.

The Wheel and Axle plant of the DSP yesterday dispatched the first consignment of WDG-04 wheels to the Indian Railways that was flagged off by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) A V Kamlakar. The design of WDG-04 wheels is critical due to its complex curvature in web profile that is different from the existing product basket. This called in for a new design of forging and dishing dies.

The entire designing, trial production, optimization and subsequent manufacturing activities and dispatch had been executed with the help of in-house resources of the Wheel and Axle plant of DSP. The entire process was completed in a record period of two months from receiving the purchase order.

“DSP is thus committed to continuing development of new products to suit the needs of the country for fast and safe railway travel,” the company said.

Being the only producer of forged railway wheels in India, DSP has been successfully developing various railway wheels of latest designs as per the requirements and specifications of Indian Railways, thereby helping in import substitution. Earlier, DSP had developed and supplied MGLOCO, BG LOCO, S-Profile Loco (2 variants), WAG-09, WAP-05 wheels as required by the Railways.

With the development and successful dispatch of WDG-4 wheels, DSP is now catering to 100 per centre requirement of locomotive wheels for Indian Railways to ensure complete indigenization of loco wheel segment for an “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
