The state-of-the-art Hot Strip Mill-2 (HSM-2) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has successfully resumed operations after completing its first ever capital repair campaign.
The Mill was stabilized on the very first day of resuming operation. The repair campaign, which began on 24th November, 2023, and concluded on 6th December, 2023, signifies a momentous achievement for the Mill.
The comprehensive capital repair campaign involved overhauling various components, including draining and cleaning of ICW, LCW, DCW, and scale pit sumps, along with the refractory refurbishment of Reheating Furnace 1&2. Additional activities encompassed thorough cleaning of Mill flume channels, Down Coiler (DC) Sump, overhauling of furnace rolls, and replacement of critical components such as headers, entry guide servo cylinder, screw-down motor, AGC loading cylinder, edger liner, cleaning and flushing of all 192 headers of ROT Laminar Cooling, replacement of DC-1 mandrel rotary unit, and Lifter Roller Table frame, among others.
Despite numerous unprecedented challenges posed by the first-ever capital repair campaign, meticulous planning and relentless efforts by the dedicated HSM-2 team ensured its successful completion. Collaborative support from contributing agencies, including Centralised Mechanical, Centralised Electrical, Automation & Instrumentation, Civil Engineering (Services), Water Management, Power Distribution, Field Machinery (Maintenance), Air Conditioning, Energy Management Department, Computer & Information Technology, Refractory, Crane Maintenance, HSM-1, Materials Management, Contract Cell (Works), Fire Services & Safety Engineering, and Personnel (Works), played a pivotal role in this success. Their exemplary contributions and unwavering support were crucial in ensuring the effective execution of the repair campaign.
The invaluable experience gained by the personnel and associated agencies during the capital repair campaign is poised to contribute significant value to the future operations of HSM-2. With this wealth of experience, the mill is now positioned to achieve new milestones in terms of production, productivity, and quality. HSM-2 strategically focuses on enhancing the production of special steels and advancing in the realm of thinner dimension coil rolling.
The campaign was executed by the team led by Mr. R K Muduli, CGM (HSM-2) under the active guidance of S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works).
