Rourkela, July 7
The state-of-the-art Hot Strip Mill-2 (HSM-2) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has successfully rolled 1160 millimeter wide and 2.2 millimeter thick High Strength LPG Grade HR Coils (IS 15914 HS 345) for the first time to cater to the niche market segment.
The ultra-modern Mill rolled 8 such coils on July 5, 2023. The effort has helped RSP to add more value to its varied product basket.
Notably, normal LPG (IS 6240) coils are rolled in two dimensions (1155 mm X2.9mm & 1680mm X 2.9mm). Development of the newer grade carries immense significance as it is fast replacing the normal LPG IS 6240 coils in the manufacturing of LPG Cylinders.
It is worth mentioning here that this grade of high-strength steel with lower thickness has been developed in line with the directive of the Govt to lower the weight of the LPG cylinders, so as to make them lighter and easier to handle by women.
The Steel Melting Shop-I of RSP made the steel of requisite properties by making the necessary changes in the chemistry. Accordingly rolling parameters were adjusted in HSM-2 to achieve the desired quality. The successful rolling of the new High Strength LPG coils will help RSP to consolidate its position in the niche market.
It is worth mentioning here that equipped with cutting edge technologies and operated by a team of highly motivated technocrats, the HSM-2 has been making relentless efforts to develop newer grades with customized specifications to cater to the niche market segments. HSM-2 has already carried out trial rolling of MC40, API X70 and rolling of coil with 2000 mm of width and upto 5 mm thickness and wider LPG coil with 1680 mm width.
It is noteworthy that the highly sophisticated Mill that was commissioned in 2022, produced 83937 HR Coils weighing 1760422 tonnes in the financial year 2022-23. The highly automated Mill has so far rolled 117431coils with a total weight of 2450796 tonnes and dispatched 2145931 Tonnes of coil.
