Nainital, November 15
Former Union Minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Monday posted pictures of arson at his Nainital home on his Facebook page.
With the pictures, he reiterated his statement asking if he was still wrong to say Hinduism was not about violence. The incident came days after Khurshid triggered a controversy by drawing similarities between Hindutva and the ideologies of radical jihadi groups like ISIS and Boko Haram.
Khurshid was attacked by the ruling BJP for making the comparisons. His own party colleague Ghulam Nabi Azad disagreed saying: “The comparison is factually incorrect and an exaggeration”.
Based on the complaint of caretaker, Sunder Ram, the police have registered an offence against Rakesh Kapil and 20 others. The police officials said strict action would be taken against perpetrators as parties had been raiding at different locations to nab the accused. The caretaker had named BJP, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists for the incident.
Condemning the incident, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, “This is disgraceful. @salman7khurshid is a statesman who has done India proud in international forums & always articulated a moderate, centrist, inclusive vision of the country domestically. The mounting levels of intolerance in our politics should be denounced by those in power.”
