Under Centre’s Apprenticeship Schemes youths are getting trained in various trades

In the last three years, a record 2,908 youths have been given apprenticeship training by the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) in various trades including mining.
According to SECL officials, young graduates and diploma holders have been trained by the company in mining engineering, mine survey, civil, electrical, mechanical etc. trades between 2020-21 and 2022-23. Under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) and National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) of the Government of India, thousands of youths of the region are benefiting from the training they are getting at SECL.
While the training received at SECL is giving the youth an opportunity of practical application of technical education received in the schools and colleges in the field, the experience gained here is also providing employment opportunities in private and public sector companies for the students.
Graduate and Technician Apprenticeship Training is provided by the Human Resource Department SECL under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme. While Engineering graduates are selected for Graduate Apprentices, Diploma candidates are taken for Technician Apprentices. Being a Coal company, preference is given to Mining Engineering/Mining and Mine Surveying Degree and Diploma holders for training imparted in SECL. However, from 2022-23, training has also been started for graduates of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering.
In the year 2020-21, under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) scheme of the Government of India, 1060 youths were given apprenticeship training in the Technician (Mining and Mine Survey) category. A total of 450 students including 140 in Graduate (Mining Engineering) and 310 in Technician (Mining and Mine Survey) were trained under the NATS scheme in 2021-22.
In the year 22-23, apart from mining, the company started providing apprentice training in other trades as well. Under the NATS scheme, 1398 youths were trained in 22-23 which included 291 youths in Graduate (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Mining Engineering) category, 1107 in Technician (Mining and Mine Surveying) category.
The purpose of SECL Apprentice Training being given under the Apprentices Act, 1961 and Government of India Apprenticeship Training Schemes is to provide on-the-job training opportunity to the youth so that their professional skills can be enhanced by developing their employability. This training is playing a vital role in developing skilled workforce for the industry by utilizing the training facilities available at SECL. The training provided here is helping the candidates become ready to adapt to the industrial environment.
