South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), an arm of state-run Coal India Limited (CIL), held its safety board meeting and deliberated on the measures taken for the safety in the mines.
The meeting was chaired by SECL’s Director Technical (Operations) M K Prasad and Director Technical (Planning/Projects) S K Pal. It was attended by safety board members that included Anand Mishra (HMS), B Dharmarao (AITUC), Sanjay Singh (BMS), B M Manohar (CITU), and G S Prasad (CMOAI).
The General Manager (Mines, Security and Rescue), B P Singh welcomed the members in the meeting that started by paying tributes to the miners who lost their lives while engaged in coal production.
The company officials gave a presentation on production and mine safety. SECL is the largest coal producing company among all the entities of the CIL.
The data related to the periodic medical examination (PME) conducted by the department of mines safety besides the details of the refresher and special training programme conducted in the issue were also presented. The company had conducted a special safety drive in all its mines in February and March 2021 under the coal mines regulation 2017.
The discussion was also held on the progress of scientific study of all opencast mines and strata control and monitoring plan for the underground mines. SECL had also started working on first-mile connectivity in major open cast mines and the progress was discussed in the meeting.
First-mile connectivity involves coal movement from pithead to despatch points. The CIL has also decided to switch to seamless mechanised coal transportation through piped conveyor belts at large mines by 2023-24. This will replace the existing road transport system for coal.
The SECL officials said the company was committed for zero accident and had been working for the same. The workers from the mines are involved in designing the safety plan.
