Hyderabad, September 13
Eight people were killed while six others were injured after a devastating fire broke in an electric bike showroom in Secunderabad that engulfed an adjoining lodge.
About 30 guests were staying in the lodge Ruby Pride located in Monda Market area in Secunderabad when the incident took place late in the night on Monday. The preliminary investigation suggested that fire started from the Ruby Motors showroom located in the basement of Ruby Lodge. Sources said fire rapidly engulfed the building trapping at least 25 people inside and filling the building with smoke.
Reports said that there was only one exit from the building, located next to the bike showroom. It got blocked due to the fire and smoke. Finding no way out, many people many jumped out of the window and were injured. The police said the death were due to suffocation while six people were injured when they jumped out of the building.
Two fire engines were rushed to the spot soon after getting the information and evacuated the people from the windows.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand said it was suspected that either an e-bike or a generator placed in the Ruby Motors showroom exploded leading to the fire. “The flames leapt up the staircase and soon engulfed the cellar, ground, first and second floors of the building. More than the fire, it was the smoke that suffocated the tourists,” he added.
An enquiry has been instituted, the police commissioner said, adding that most of the victims were tourists. A few bodies are yet to be identified.
