Security forces catch 16 Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur

In a major breakthrough in the on-going operations against the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), security forces apprehended 16 activists of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the feat came during a joint search operation conducted in the Gangalur, Jangla, and Basaguda police station areas. Explosive materials and items related to Maoists propaganda were recovered from the arrested rebels, sources said, adding that the operation was carried out by a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), police from Basaguda, Gangalur, and Jangla police stations besides commandos of elite CoBRA drawn from battalions 210 and 202, and CRPF 229.

Of the arrested Maoists, two were apprehended from the Basaguda police station area, six from Gangalur and eight from Jangla, sources said.

During interrogation, the accused informed them that they were planning to use the explosives to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to target and inflict casualties on the security forces. The explosives and other materials were collected to execute the crime.

All the arrested Maoists were produced before the local court of law from where they were sent to jail on judicial remand.
