Fourteen Maoists were killed in separate encounters with the security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division on Saturday.
All the 14 bodies were recovered during the search operations that followed the gun-battles, Bastar police said in a statement. While bodies of two rebels were discovered from Bijapur district and 12 Maoists were killed in Sukma district. Weapons that included AK 47, INSAS, SLR Rifles in large quantity were also recovered from the encounter site.
The police said a search operation was launched by the security forces on the basis of strong input about the presence of armed Maoists in the southern areas of Bijapur and Sukma districts. The DRG teams were dispatched to South Bastar region as part of the campaign.
During the operation, an intermittent encounter between the DRG and the Maoists started since around 05:00 am in Bijapur district. In Sukma district also around 08:00 security forces and rebels engaged in the gun-battle.
The police said since the operation was still ongoing, the exact location of the encounter, the number of security forces involved in the operation and other sensitive information cannot be shared at this time to ensure the safety of the personnel involved in the operation.
