In a fresh assault on the Left-Wing Extremists (LWE) in Chhattisgarh, security forces on Saturday gunned down 16 Maoists in Sukma district.
A large quantity of AK 47, SLR, INSAS Rifle, .303 Rifle, Rocket launcher, BGL launcher and explosives were recovered from the encounter site. The recovery of sophisticated weapons indicates senior cadre would be among the dead.
According to officials, a joint party of DRG Sukma and CRPF left for anti-Maoists operation on Friday. The move was based on the intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists in Keralapal police station area of Sukka district.
The security forces established contact with the rebels Saturday morning at around 8 am. After the encounter, the jawans conducted a search operation in the area and discovered 16 bodies of Maoists besides a huge cache of arms and ammunition.
Two DRG jawans were injured in the encounter. Officials said the condition of injured jawans is normal and out of danger.
Identity of Maoists killed in the encounter is being ascertained, the officials said, adding that the number of Maoists casualties could increase as search operation in the area was still going on.
