Security forces on Thursday gunned down three hardcore Maoists in a fierce encounter at Sukma district in Chhattisgarh.

The bodies have been discovered by the security forces. A huge cache of arms and ammunition had also been recovered from the site.

In a statement, the Bastar police said a joint part of District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) of Chhattisgarh Police and elite CoBRA commandos from CRPF on Wednesday launched an anti-Maoist operation in the area straddling between Sukma and Bijapur district. The operation was launched based on the intelligence tip off about the presence of top Maoist leaders in the area.

When the party reached hilly terrains between village Paliguda-Gundarajgudem village, Maoists ambushed the security personnel. The jawans retaliated as the encounter started at around 10 am. The police said rebels were firing intermittently and later retreated from the spot.
