Narayanpur, July 2
Security forces in Chhattisgarh received another major breakthrough in its on-going operations against the Left-Wing Extremists as rebels reportedly received a big blow in an encounter with the jawans in Narayanpur district on Tuesday.
The gunfight broke out in a forest under Kohkameta police station area in Abhujmad when rebels ambushed the joint team of security personnel who were conducting an operation in the area. Besides the District Reserve Guard (DRG), personnel from the Special Task Force (STF) of Chhattisgarh Police, Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) from different districts were part of the joint team.
Sources said the rebels had made necessary arrangements and built bunkers to target the security personnel. However, the DRG jawans, who are so familiar with the local terrains and technology of rebels, foiled their attempt. The senior police officials claimed that no jawan was hurt in the gunbattle.
Unconfirmed reports said that about a dozen Maoists had been killed in the encounter. Eleven bodies have also been recovered, the reports said.
The senior officials however did not deny the reports and said the forces were still in the dense forest and the exact figure would be known once they returned to the base with the bodies discovered.
