Shillong, March 28

The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) received another jolt as member of District Council (MDC) from Rambrai Jyrngam Constituency Bajop Pyngrope tendered his resignation on Monday along with 20 office-bearers.

The leaders reached the Congress Bhawan at Shillong and submitted their resignation letter. Speaking with media persons, Pyngrope said the Congress infighting was not only in Meghalaya but also at the national level. He alleged that the higher-ups in the party, who are corrupted, compelled them to step down from the party.

Pyngrope said he would join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on March 31. He said the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had helped resolving the long-pending issue on the Assam-Meghalaya border.

In February this year, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) surprisingly announced joining the ruling coalition government, the BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).

In March 2018, the NPP party won 19 out of 60 assembly seats in the Meghalaya state polls and formed government with the support of BJP. Conrad Sangma was sworn in as Chief Minister of the state.

In May 2018, the party won Williamnagar Assembly seat in a by-election making its tally to 20 out of 60 assembly seats in the Assembly.
