New Delhi, October 13
The Congress presidential election took a new twist as one of the two candidates, Shashi Tharoor took strong exception over senior leaders supporting his opponent Mallikarjun Kharge.
Tharoor said that if anyone (Congress leaders) wanted change, then they should vote for him instead of Mallikarjun Kharge reiterating that there is no spirit of enmity in the party over the polls. The Congress presidential poll will take place on October 17 and the results will be out on October 19.
The Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Thiruvananthapuram lashed out at some leaders openly coming out in support of his poll opponent Mallikarjun Kharge and even summoned meetings in his favour. “It disturbed the level-playing field,” Tharoor said while seeking votes from delegates at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) office here on Thursday. He said he wanted to bring a “change” in the organisation.
He also said aimed to “bring back” the voters who did not support the Congress in the 2014 and the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “I want to bring a change in the party. I want to bring back those voters who didn’t stand by our side in 2014 and 2019,” he told the delegates.
Lodging complaint that he could not meet some delegates as their contact details were “missing” from the list that was provided to him, Tharoor said there were incomplete contact details in the list of delegates that he received. “Some lists had names but no contact numbers, some had names but no proper address. Hence, it was difficult to reach out to them,” Tharoor claimed.
