Mumbai, July 4
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday comfortably won the floor test in the state legislative assembly.
In the 288-member house, 164 MLAs voted for the motion of confidence while 99 voted against. With the strength of the Maharashtra Assembly reducing to 287 following the death of a Shiv Sena MLAs, the magic mark was set at 144.
Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the BJP member who joined the league of youngest speakers in the country, declared that the trust vote has been carried by a majority vote.
Shinde was sworn in as the Chief Minister on June 30 after Uddhav Thackeray resigned after failing to avoid floor test in the House as asked by Speaker Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari in the backdrop of revolt in the Shiv Sena. A majority of Shiv Sena MLAs lined up with Shinde. Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP was sworn in as deputy Chief Minister after Shinde formed the government backed by the BJP.
The Governor asked for floor test after he received a letter from 7 independent MLAs who had decided not to support the Maha Vikas Agadhi (MVA) alliance comprising Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Indian National Congress.
The trouble for the MVA government started after rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde broke away from the Shiv Sena with at least 39 of the 56 Shiv Sena MLAs and formed the rebel outfit Shiv Sena Balasahib.
