New Delhi, February 2
The Congress party has dropped Punjab Party Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu from the list of star campaigner in Uttarakhand while inducting Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to canvass and convince the Sikh voters.
In the poll-bound state of Uttarakhand, Sikh voters have a decisive say in nine of the 11 assembly constituencies in Udham Singh Nagar. The BJP had won all but one of it in 2017 state elections.
The Congress is confident of getting the Sikhs’ support this time, because many Sikh farmers had participated in and even led the agitation against the now-repealed farm laws introduced by the Modi government in 2020. But instead of pushing Sidhu to encash it, Congress has put bet on Channi.
The development came as a big surprise as local Congress leaders said Sikh community dominates villages in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Kumaon and Sidhu is a good orator and a crowd puller. His name not finding a mention is surprising, they added
The list of 30 leaders also included the names of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sachin Pilot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Randeep Surjewala, Hardik Patel and Ragini Nayak.
Jai Singh Agrawal is also among others in the list of Congress’ star campaigners in Uttarakhand.
