Six killed in furnace blast at Godawari Power and Ispat in Chhattisgarh

Six workers were killed while another six were injured as a blast furnace reportedly burst at Godawari Power and Ispat Limited (GPIL) in Chhattisgarh.

The plant, which is located in the Siltara industrial area at the outskirts of the state capital, is an arm of Hira Group. The accident occurred on Friday evening when the labourers were working near the blast furnace.  

According to police sources, the workers received severe injuries including burn in the blast. They were immediately rushed to a private hospital where six were pronounced dead on admission. Sources said the six died on the spot itself.

Six others have been admitted to the hospital, where the condition of a few is reported to be critical. The incident irked the other workers and relatives of the victims who gathered outside the plant’s gate and staged a demonstration.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the incident and instructed the district administration to expedite relief and rescue operations.

An official statement said the Chief Minister Sai had instructed the district administration to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. Expressing his deep sorrow over the incident, Sai stated that it was a very unfortunate and painful accident. He conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed to God for peace for the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families.
