Jamshedpur, September 8
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Tata Steel introduced the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for transportation of finished steel at Jamshedpur.
This initiative, launched earlier on July 29 at the Sahibabad Plant, has now been extended to Jamshedpur with the inaugural run organised today from Billet Yard to Beekay Steel Plant.
Sudhansu Pathak, Vice President, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel graced the occasion as Chief Guest along with Peeyush Gupta, Vice President, Supply Chain, Tata Steel, Sanjiv Paul, Vice President, Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel and Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union.
Tata Steel has tied up with an Indian startup to pursue its aspiration of deploying EVs for transportation of finished steel. Tata Steel has contract for deployment of 27 EVs having a minimum carrying capacity of 35 tonnes of steel. The Company plans to deploy 15 EVs at its Jamshedpur Plant and 12 EVs at its Sahibabad plant.
Speaking on the occasion, Sudhansu Pathak referred to the adoption of this technology as a very important initiative to reduce carbon footprint and further the cause of sustainability. The initiative is a reinforcement of Tata Steel’s commitment as a responsible corporate towards the residents of the city, he added.
Peeyush Gupta said that the initiative is aimed at reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and will help protect the environment in the long run.
Sanjiv Paul congratulated the Supply Chain Division for this achievement and expressed his desire to see in future, an ecosystem which is developed to support the long-distance movement as well.
Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary applauded the efforts of the teams responsible for this new initiative and remarked that this initiative will further the cause of sustainability in the green city of Jamshedpur.
The EVs being deployed comprise a 2.5 ton, 275kWh Lithium ion battery pack with a sophisticated cooling system with a battery management system having capability to operate at ambient temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. The battery pack is powered by a 160 kWh charger set-up which is able to charge the battery from 0 to 100% in 95 min. With zero tail-pipe emission, each EV would reduce the GHG footprint by more than 125 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent every year.
Tata Steel’s vision is to be the global steel industry benchmark in Value Creation and Corporate Citizenship. Sustainable business practices are key enablers to achieving this vision. The “Responsible Supply Chain Policy” of Tata Steel lays down “Environmental Protection” as an integral sustainability principle for all its Supply Chain decisions and processes.
