Gopalpur/Jamshedpur, August 22
In a significant step towards sustainable operations, Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), Gopalpur located in Ganjam district of Odisha, has successfully transitioned from using furnace oil to Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) for its energy requirements.
The strategic shift is expected to substantially reduce the plant’s carbon footprint while ensuring operational efficiency.
The transition follows an agreement signed between Tata Steel and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), under which IOCL will supply the agreed quantity of LPG to the Gopalpur facility which is operated under the steel major’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD). This collaboration not only reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainability but also demonstrates a strong industry partnership aimed at reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
Inaugurating the LPG facility, Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge, FAMD, Tata Steel, said, “The switch from furnace oil to LPG at FAP Gopalpur is another important milestone in our journey towards cleaner fuels with the aim of lower carbon footprint. We are delighted to partner with IOCL in this endeavour, which will help us reduce carbon emissions as well reduce harmful sulfur oxides and contribute to India’s journey towards a greener industrial future.”
The Plant has installed an LPG facility and will use the cleaner fuel for preheating the chrome ore that is used for producing chrome ore briquette. The facility will enable the steel major to completely replace the use of furnace oil as a fuel with the natural gas marking a transformative step towards cleaner and more sustainable industrial operations.
The use of LPG is expected to cut down CO₂ emissions significantly while offering better process control and cleaner combustion. Apart from environmental benefits, the move will also help optimize costs and improve overall operational performance at the facility.
Notably, FAMD has earlier replaced the use of furnace oil with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) at its Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) in Jajpur district of Odisha.
BD Nanda, Chief (Operations – Ferro Alloys Plants), FAMD, Kishore Baran Maity, Head, FAP Gopalpur, Atla Rambabu, Head, Safety (FAP and FPC) FAMD, and other senior officials of Tata Steel were present at the inaugural event held at FAP Gopalpur.
