Over a dozen passengers were assaulted and belongings were looted by robbers in Sambalpur-Jammu Tawi Express in Jharkhand’s Latehar district in the wee hours on Sunday.
The incident took place around between Latehar and Barwadih stations under Dhanbad division of East Central Railway (ECR), about 280 km south from here. According to a passenger. Around 10-12 robbers boarded the train at Latehar station and threatened passengers by firing in the air near Chhipadohar station.
Two passengers, who received bullet wounds, are admitted in Medininagar government medical College hospital at Daltonganj.
Vikas Mittal, one of the passengers in S 9 coach of the train travelling in the 18309 Sambalpur-Jammu Tawi Express said he was going to Vaishanav Devi with family members. About 10 robbers boarded the train at Latehar station as passengers. They started beating the passengers with rifle butts and did not spare even children and women.
Two passengers, who resisted the loot, were hit by bullets on their heads. The robbers snatched mobile sets, ornaments and Rs 75,000 cash from the passengers. They deboarded the train near Chhipadohar station and carried many suitcases with them.
When the train reached Daltonganj station, headquarters of Palamu division, passengers created a ruckus and alleged RPF escort was missing in the train.
Deputy Commissioner, Rajesh Kumar Shah and divisional commercial manager of Eastern Central Railways, Amresh Kumar met the passengers and got the injured admitted in the hospital. Government Railway Police registered an FIR on the complaint of the passengers.
