Three people were killed while two including a minor were seriously injured when a pit in which they were extracting ash collapsed at the outskirts of the Chhattisgarh capital Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place in the Siltara industrial area. A group of five people were engaged in the extraction of fly ash dumped by the industry in an open area. From the fly ash, they used to filter out coal that was used for cooking purposes. It was their routine work.
Sources said while digging the pit that had taken the shape of a tunnel over the years, they went deep inside. All of a sudden, it collapsed, trapping all the five. While two persons were rescued, others were not so lucky. Three people died on the spot while the two rescued were injured. The condition of one of the injured, a 15-year-old minor girl, was reported to be critical.
The police party along with the rescue team rushed to the spot soon after getting the information and extracted the bodies from the debris. The victims, all residents of Sakara at the outskirts of Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, include two women and a man. They were identified as Mohar Bai Manhare, Puneet Kumar Manhare and Pacho Gehre.
The police have registered an offence and are investigating the matter.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed grief over the incident and directed the officials to ensure best medical care to the injured.
