Token rush tramples 17 women in Chhattisgarh

Desperation of farmers to dispose of their yield resulted in a stampede that left 17 women injured in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district on Monday.

The injured were among a large number of farmers who had lined up to get the token for selling paddy. The Chhattisgarh government, which is paying Rs 2500 per quintal for the paddy, will start the procurement from November 1.

According to reports, the incident took place at the primary cooperative societies of Piperchedi where farmers gathered in the morning to collect the token that would facilitate them to sell their produce. The state government has made the arrangement to ensure a smooth procurement process.

When the gate opened, people crushed to make the entry, trampling the women standing in the front row. The injured were admitted to the nearest government hospital where their condition was reported to be stable.

The state government took a prompt note and placed the manager of the society under suspension.
