CPI (Maoist) politburo member Misir Besra and his squad members managed to escape following an encounter with security forces in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district.

Besra is reported to be the brain behind the Maoist operations in Jharkhand and has been carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head.

According to Superintendent of Police Ajay Linda, they received a vital tip off about the movement of Misir Besra and his team in the Tumbahaka and Sarjamburu forests. Based on the information, the operation was planned in which the elite anti-Maoist force of CRPF CoBRA and Jharkhand police were involved. The operation was launched on Sunday afternoon.

At around 12.30 pm, the security forces came in contact with the rebels when Maoists opened fire. The security forces retaliated, leading to a fierce gun-battle. Taking the cover, Misir and his team slipped into the forests and escaped.

Linda said a massive search operation has been launched in the area; no casualty had been reported on either side.

Misir is seen as a replacement of Prashant Bose alias Kishan Da who was arrested by Jharkhand police last month in a big blow to the left wing extremism.

Bose, who is the brain behind merger of MCCI and PWG, and make CPI(Maoist). hails from Kolkata and is not only a key member of the Maoist Central Committee and the Polit Bureau but is also the second in command after its general secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavraj.
