New Delhi, March 5
Ahead of West Bengal assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) received a big jolt as its former Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Trivedi joined the BJP today.
He had resigned from Rajya Sabha in February. Though he was side-lined in the TMC’s political affairs, Trivedi’s joining BJP would send an adverse message among ruling party cadre and supporters. The party is already facing a big challenge from the BJP.
“I welcome Dinesh Trivedi to BJP. I always used to say he was the right person in the wrong party but now he is in the right party,” BJP President JP Nadda said while welcoming Trivedi in the party.
Dinesh Trivedi, a former Union minister, had announced his resignation from Rajya Sabha during a debate on the Budget in Parliament on February 12.
“I am resigning from the Rajya Sabha. There is violence happening in my state [West Bengal]. We cannot speak anything here,” Dinesh Trivedi said after his resignation,” Dinesh Trivedi said after announcing resignation from the Rajya Sabha.
Dinesh Trivedi had then said that he resigned as he was feeling “suffocated” for not being able to do anything over violence in West Bengal.
“Grateful to my party that they’ve sent me here. I’m feeling suffocated that we’re not able to do anything over violence in the state. My soul tells me that if you can’t do anything sitting here, then you must resign. I will continue to work for people of West Bengal,” Dinesh Trivedi said.
