Raipur, February 19
The movement of an elephant herd spotted in the periphery of Chhattisgarh’s famous tourist spot in Gangrel dam had forced the authorities to close the centre.
The Gangrel dam is a popular tourist spot in Dhamtari district, about 90 km from the state capital of Raipur. Built across the Mahanadi River, the reservoir offers a lot of water sports, Virgin Islands and much more. Also known as Ravishankar Dam, during monsoons it becomes a must visit place with picturesque islands and enriched flora and fauna.
The district authorities received information from the villagers about the movement of elephants in the area. “The district administration had ordered the closure of resorts, water sports and other activities in the tourist spot with immediate effect,” government spokesperson said.
The Chhattisgarh Tourism board has a luxurious property in the site. Those who have made advance booking could be allowed to check-in but the administration had asked the guests not to move out of the resort. The villages in the periphery have also been put on high alert to avoid any loss to life and property.
