The security forces gunned down two Maoists including a local commander in an encounter that took place in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday morning.

The jawans from the 217th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) were on a search operation when contacted with the rebels near Gompad village under Konta police station in Sukma district. The rebels had opened fire at the security personnel who retaliated and killed two Maoists.

Of the rebels killed, one had been identified as Kawasi Hunga. He was local commander of the outlawed outfit and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. The other Maoist was identified as Soyam Bajari.

Sukma Superintendent of Police Sunil Sharma said that detonators and a large quantity of literature were recovered from the spot. Based on the blood stains recovered from the spot, the Sukma police chief claimed that three to four Maoists were severely injured in the encounter.
