In Ballari, where access to healthcare has long been limited, people often struggled for even the most basic facilities. The lack of infrastructure turned curable illnesses into lifelong hardships.
But now, the tide is turning, with NMDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility. What was once known as VIMS is now Ballari Medical College and Research Centre, a super-specialty government hospital, has become a lifeline not just for Ballari, but also for neighbouring districts and even parts of Andhra Pradesh.
For years, the institution bore the burden of overcrowded wards and limited facilities, forcing patients to travel far in search of care. With modern equipment and strengthened infrastructure, the hospital can accommodate more patients, especially those who depend solely on government hospitals for critical care.
This year, NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, extended its support to the hospital through its CSR initiative. A contribution of ₹8.33 crore has changed the hospital into critical additions that directly save lives like the ICU ventilators that support fragile breaths, neonatal circuits for newborns, Bubble CPAP and pediatric BiPAP devices that ease respiratory distress, and High Flow Nasal Cannula machines that deliver oxygen support just in time.
Surgical capabilities too have been upgraded, with HD laparoscopes, ERCP scopes, and laser systems for procedures that were once available only in private hospitals. New operating tables and advanced LED lights now bring greater precision and safety into the surgical theatre.
Doctors who once felt helpless in the face of avoidable deaths now speak with renewed conviction. “With more medical equipment, we can care for more patients, bringing the hospital closer to fulfilling its mission. We sincerely appreciate NMDC’s contribution, which has made this possible.” says Dr T Gangadhara Gouda MBBS, MD, Director of VIMS.
