Violence hit Bihar cities during Ramnavami procession

Patna, March 31

Police resorted to firing at Sasaram in the district headquarters of Rohtas to bring the situation under control after members of two communities clashed during Ramnavami procession resulting in violence and arson.

Reports of violence had also come in from Nalanda,109 km east from the state capital, following clashes between two different groups. When the procession was passing through Diwanganj area, it is alleged stones were pelted and two rounds were fired from the roof top, injuring two.

Police said today’s violence was fall out of Friday’s slogan shouting between the two groups. The violence started from Diwanganj area in Nalanda, which happens to be the home district of the Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar.

At Sasaram, about 125 km from Patna, five policemen were injured when they were hit by stones at Saheblal Pirganj area. Two people were injured when police resorted to firings in self-defence.

Sources said five houses were torched while prohibitory orders have been imposed in both the places.

Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to reach Sasaram on Sunday to attend birth day celebrations of Emperor Ashoka organised by BJP.
