A white tiger died at Maitri Bagh of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an arm of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), on Tuesday.

The tiger, named Kishan, was around nine years old and was born in the Maitra Bagh, located in the steel city about 40 km from the Chhattisgarh capital. According to zoo authorities, his father’s name was Sundar and mother’s name was Kamala, who had given birth to 5 cubs in her lifetime. She died in 2016.

Out of the five white big cats produced by Kamla, three were given to Rajkot Zoo in Gujarat while two including Kishan stayed in Maitri Bagh. In exchange for Kamla’s cubs, Maitri Bagh had received Asiatic lions.

This tiger was diagnosed with cancer and its treatment was going on under the guidance of a doctor from Maitri Bagh and a wildlife specialist doctor of Anjora Veterinary Hospital in Durg. Despite all efforts from the veterinary doctors, Kishan could not be saved.

The post mortem of the lion was conducted in the presence of Forest Department officials, Conservator of Forests, DFO and SDO, Durg and government doctors. Later, the last rites were performed with full honours.
