Ending days of uncertainty, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday announced Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s chief ministerial face for the ensuing Assembly elections, pushing Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu out of the race.
But even in defeat, it is seen as a major victory for Sidhu. For, his strategy has worked as he never wanted to be the chief ministerial face; rather wish to have his say in the party affairs that he has negotiated with Rahul Gandhi before Channi’s name has been announced.
After reaching Punjab, Rahul Gandhi held a closed-door meeting in Ludhiana’s Hyatt residence with Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar. The three were in the race. AICC general secretary in-charge organisation KC Venugopal also present.
Sidhu hinted at his move while addressing an election meeting in Ludhiana with Rahul Gandhi. He urged Rahul Gandhi to keep him as the “foundation stone” of the party. “Don’t treat me like a showpiece,” Sidhu said, indicating that his influence in the party affairs, no matter who is the chief minister, shall remain unquestionable.
The former cricketer known for aggressive batting is now playing defensive; waiting for March 10 when the electoral fate of Congress in Punjab will be known. The state goes to the polls on February 20.
As part of his strategy, it was a good move by Sidhu. Congress is expected to lose, so Channi gets all the blame. If by miracle Congress manages to win, then Sidhu can always use high command to topple Channi. Win-win in both scenarios!
The decision of Congress indicates that it has gone by the popular demand of the party leaders and workers. Besides, cash in on the Dalit-Sikh face and nearly 32 per cent SC population in the state.
