A contract labourer died after being trapped in a conveyor belt in the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an entity of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district on Tuesday evening.
The mishap took place at the Sinter Plant 2 of Bhilai Steel Plant. The contract labourer was entangled in the belt and was immediately rushed to the Main Medical Post, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The victim was identified as Kanha Charan Mehar (37 years), a resident of Arya Nagar, Kohka. He was working in the conveyor belt number FS-9 of SP 2 when the rod suddenly split and fell on the contract worker Kanha. He was seriously injured.
The other workers informed the departmental officers about the incident. Immediately an ambulance was called and he was taken to the Main Medical Post. But the doctors pronounced him dead on admission. He was working in BSP under contractor CB Patel.
The representatives of the trade union reached the victim’s house and consoled the family members. They demanded adequate compensation and a job for the kin of the deceased labourer. The union leaders said the incident took place because of the negligence of SAIL-BSP management and the contractor.
The SAIL-BSP management however had not come out with any statement on the incident.
