Raipur, June 4
An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in Chhattisgarh has never anticipated such a send-off on his transfer from the district.
The 2008-batch IAS officer was posted as a district collector. The officer was among the scores of administrative officers reshuffled by the state government recently.
Hundreds of labourers gathered near a temple in the heart of the industrial town and celebrated the transfer of the officer from the district. The workers blamed the IAS officer for the lethargy in addressing their plight.
Since 2007, the labourers have been demanding construction of sheds, offices, toilets and other basic amenities for them. However, a decade and half passed but the issue could not be resolved.
The Collector, whose transfer was celebrated with pomp by the workers, further worsened their problem. The Collector sanctioned the shed and completed the formality, the workers said. But the shed was of no use as it was constructed at the outskirts of the city.
Even the quality was so poor that the workers feared taking shelter, dreading it could collapse. The workers charged a shady deal in the construction of the shed and had demanded a high- level enquiry into the matter.
A few associations even distributed sweets to mark the occasion.
