Lucknow, March 22
After being elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gorakhpur constituency, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today resigned from the state Legislative Council.
Adityanath was not a member of any House in the Uttar Pradesh assembly when he took over as the Chief Minister in 2017 after the landslide victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was later nominated to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. His term in the council is still remaining and hence, Adityanath has to resign.
Yogi Adityanath, who led his party to a thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh, is likely to take oath as Chief Minister of the state for the second term on March 25, according to BJP insiders. He will be the first Chief Minister in the last 37 years to return to power after completing a full term in the office.
In fact, this is the first time Adityanath, a monk-turned-politician, has been elected to the state assembly. He trounced defeating the Samajwadi Party candidate Subhawati Upendra Dutt Shukla by a huge margin of 1,03,390 from Gorakhpur Urban constituency.
