Hyderabad, July 9
YS Vijayamma, chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh’s ruling Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s mother today announced her resignation from the party.
She made the announcement at the YSRCP’s plenary, which began on Friday and conclude today. Vijayamma had indicated that she would join the YSR Telangana party headed by her daughter YS Sharmila.
YSR Telangana was launched by Sharmila in July 2021, on the 72nd birth anniversary of her father, late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, fondly known as YSR. The aim was to expand the party’s base in Telangana that was part of Andhra Pradesh. YSR was the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and enjoyed equal clout in Telangana region.
The move of Sharmila was also seen as a split in the YSR family as Jagan would head the party in Andhra while his sister would lead in Telangana. However, YSRCP had clarified that it had no support to YSR Telangana. Mother Vijayamma would now join her daughter to establish the party base in Telangana that would pose a new threat to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao who is projecting himself as the prominent leader of non-BJP alliance.
“I have decided leaving the party because Sharmila is fighting a lonely battle there (in Telangana). My conscience says that there is a need for me to stand by her as the wife of Rajasekhara Reddy and as her mother,” Vijayamma said while addressing the session. “When my son was struggling, I was with him. It would be wrong on my part if I continue to be with him when he is happy while my daughter is struggling. She too is my own blood. I have taken this decision so that it does not hurt anyone or becomes controversial. I also seek your apologies for this,” she added.
Following Vijayamma’s resignation, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was on Saturday elected “president for lifetime” of YSRC. The decision was taken at the concluding day of the YSRC’s two-day plenary after an amendment to the party’s constitution.
