If a senior minister in the Imran Khan government is to be believed, India has plunged the entire Pakistan in darkness by cutting the electricity supply.
The blackout was reported a little before midnight by citizens on social media from across the country, including major urban centres such as Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Multan, as well as smaller towns and cities.
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy spokesperson, tweeting from the ministry’s official Twitter handle, said that according to initial reports, the Guddu power plant developed a fault at 11:41pm on Saturday night.
“The fault caused the country’s high transmission lines to trip, which in turn caused the system frequency to drop from 50 to 0 in less than a second. The drop in frequency caused power plants to shut down.”
Interestingly, Pakistan’s interior minister Sheikh Rasheed blamed India for the power breakdown in the country. He said India had engineered the power cut in Pakistan to divert the attention from the farmers’ agitation near the National capital.
Though Sheikh Rasheed is known for his outspoken comments, his statement can be interpreted as India’s power to plunge the entire Pakistan into darkness. However, his comment has been jeered in the social media.
As one said: “Ye off karke on karne ka idea bhi Sheikh Rasheed ka ho ga.” Another quipped that there was a dance party going on at the house of Sheikh Rasheed when power went off.
A tweet showed him making a call that Imran Khan had mistakenly consumed detergent in the washroom.
